Back-to-School: Southwest Gas Partners with Schools, Colleges, and Nonprofits to Open Doors for the Next Generation

Programs help students build skills, explore careers, and prepare for the future

 
LAS VEGAS — Across Southwest Gas’ service territory in Nevada, the company and the Southwest Gas Foundation are partnering with schools, colleges, and nonprofit organizations to support students through essential resources, hands-on learning, safety education, mentorship, scholarships, and career training.

Programs and partnerships across Southwest Gas’ service territory in Nevada include:  
 
Audio Booth Donation to Gilbert Elementary School
Southwest Gas recently donated an audio booth to students at Gilbert Elementary School in North Las Vegas. Students enrolled in the school’s Studio Class will use the booth to record voice overs for their student-ran newscast. The booth will also support theater post-production projects. Originally housed in Southwest Gas’ Audio Visual Department, the repurposed booth will assist students with media broadcasting and production skills.
 
Corporate Work Study Program with Cristo Rey St. Viator College Preparatory High School
Since 2019, Southwest Gas has partnered with Cristo Rey St. Viator through the school’s Corporate Work Study Program. Through this partnership, students gain valuable mentorship, hands-on exposure to the utility industry, and real-world professional experience. These opportunities help students build critical workplace skills, expand professional networks, and develop confidence needed to succeed in college and beyond. Over the last seven years, more than 40 students have received mentorship through the program.
 
Dual Credit Natural Gas Program at Central Technical Training Academy (CTTA)
Southwest Gas partners with CTTA, the College of Southern Nevada, and Clark County School District to offer dual-credit natural gas courses for juniors and seniors enrolled in building trades and technical education programs. Students gain hands-on experience from current Southwest Gas employees, while earning college credit to support continued education or entry into the workforce after high school.
 
Energy Safe Kids with the National Energy Foundation (NEF)
For nearly 30 years, Southwest Gas has partnered with the NEF to promote energy education and safety awareness in schools. Through the Energy Safe Kids program, elementary and middle school teachers receive curriculum that helps students recognize and respond to a suspected natural gas leak, identify natural gas appliances and pipeline markers, and understand the importance of calling 811 before digging. Last year, 130 schools throughout Southwest Gas’ service territory used the program.
 
Partnership with Jesse Scott (Scott) Elementary School
Since the 2015 school year, the Southwest Gas Foundation has partnered with Scott elementary school on various events and activities, including the annual Trunk or Treat event, STEM/STEAM projects the schools recycling program, school supply drives, teacher appreciation week and career days
 
Partnership with Western Nevada College (WNC)
Since 2017, the Southwest Gas Foundation has sponsored the WNC Foundation Gala, helping raise funds for student scholarships. The Company has also donated equipment to the college’s automotive and welding programs, while the college’s construction management, welding, and commercial driving programs have supported the training of utility employees and interns.
 
The Public Education Foundation Scholarships and Sponsorship
The Southwest Gas Foundation has supported The Public Education since 2016, helping students receive financial assistance to attend college through the Black Girl Magic and Hispanic Heritage scholarships and assisting teachers by sponsoring the teacher superstore.
 
Summer Internship Program
Southwest Gas offers a paid Summer Internship Program for currently enrolled college and university students across the U.S. The 10-week program offers hands-on experience and professional development opportunities across a variety of business functions. Applications are open from January through April, with the program starting in June. Last year, more than 2,900 students from across the country applied for the internship program.
 
Together, these collaborative efforts help open doors for opportunity and reflect Southwest Gas’ long-standing commitment to enriching lives and strengthening communities.
